Robert Ashley

Robert Ashley

"The energy that keeps me working is something that I've never been able to understand rationally. I see it objectively only when the piece actually happens in front of me. When I hear it, then I say, Yeah, I was right; or no, I was wrong."

Robert Ashley is a composer, performer, and pioneer in video opera and experimental musical theater. His operetic works have a uniquely original style and are distinctly American in subject matter and use of language.

Robert Ashley co-founded both the ONCE Group, and the Sonic Arts Union, a group which included David Behrman, Alvin Lucier and Gordon Mumma. His much praised operas, beginning with Perfect Lives, have been presented throughout the world, at the Avignon Festival, Festival d'Automne (Paris), Musica Strasbourg, the Almeida Festival (London), Festival de Otono (Madrid), New Music America (New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Philadelphia), Inventionen (Berlin), USIS Interlink Festival (Japan) ...

Ashley currently lives in New York. He travels and performs worldwide.
